Bakewell CE Infant School is an inclusive school. We believe in inclusion in mainstream school wherever possible, to enable all pupils, whatever their educational need to achieve their full potential.
Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) is Mrs Sue Beckett, (sbeckett@bakewell-inf@derbyshire.sch.uk). She, along with teaching staff, monitors all children and considers the particular needs of those children who need adaptations to provision so that they are able to flourish.
The SEN Code of Practice states that it is the duty of school to ensure that all needs, whatever they may be, are fully met. The SENCo liaises with class teachers and relevant outside agencies to plan adequate and relevant provision. Parents are fully informed regarding their child's progress and regular review meetings are held throughout the year.
Children with special needs are primarily supported within the classroom by the teachers and teaching assistants through high- quality, inclusive teaching. All staff are aware of the SEND needs of the pupils and, with input from the SENCo, they maintain an individual education plan (IEP) detailing how provision is adapted and enhanced so that individual needs will be met. Progress is closely monitored and appropriate interventions and additional support are available to pupils who need it.
The school is well equipped for access in and out for any wheelchair users as all main entry points have a ramp into school. We have support handles placed in children’s toilets and also a disabled toilet and changing room.
We liaise closely with a team of professionals who visit school to provide advice and support for pupils with specific needs.
