Pupil Premium

As part of the Government’s policy to improve the educational attainment of under-performing groups, additional funding has been allocated to schools through the Pupil Premium Grant. The allocation is based on the number of pupils in reception to Year 2 who have ever been entitled to Free School Meals since January 2007, who are children in care or Armed Services children. This money has to be used by schools to narrow the gap between underperforming groups, in this case, between pupils entitled to free school meals and pupils who are not entitled to free school meals.

The Governors recognise that not all children entitled to pupil premium are disadvantaged, and not all disadvantaged children are eligible for pupil premium. At Bakewell CE Infant School we use the funding to narrow the gap between any disadvantaged child and their peers.

At Bakewell CE Infant School the Governors have decided that this money is allocated to Teaching Assistant hours for each class in order to support the children in their learning. It has funded additional hours to provide Interventions in reading, writing and mathematics. As follows:-

Numicon – an Intervention aimed at Year 2 pupils who are not progressing in mathematics as well as their peers. This Intervention supports pupils in the basics of counting, number patterns, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Better Words – an Intervention aimed at improving the confidence of Year 1 pupils to read high frequency words at speed by recognition.

Early Literacy Skills – a programme designed to build confidence in Year 1 pupils to write independently, developing basic skills.

Talk Boost – an Intervention aimed at Reception and Year 1 children to develop speaking and listening skills as a pre-writing tool, building vocabulary and confidence.

Better Reading Partnership – a 1-1 reading programme designed to build confidence in reading aloud and understanding text.

ECAT - an intervention to enable children to find their voice.

All these Interventions are planned into the daily timetable and are run by our team of Teaching Assistants.
